Colin and the Dragon

In the land of Nosh there lived a dragon.  The people of Nosh did not like him at all.

He did not know how to breathe fire, but he blew smoke that turned the people’s hands and faces black. The people of Nosh had to take a lot of baths.

He did now know how to fly, but he flapped his wings so hard that it blew the dogs and cats up into the trees.
The firefighters of Nosh had to rescue a lot of dogs and cats.

He did not know how to roar, but he made a high pitched squeak.  It was so high pitched that only the dogs could hear it, and they howled in pain from the trees.  The people of Nosh got tired of always hearing dogs bark and howl.

The dogs and cats and people of Nosh did not like the dragon at all.

“We must get rid of this dragon!” the people cried.  They held lots of meetings about the dragon.  They passed a law that said no dragons were allowed to live in the land of Nosh, but the dragon did not listen.

So the people of Nosh kept taking baths.  The firefighters kept rescuing dogs and cats.  And the dogs kept howling.

In the land of Nosh there lived a boy named Colin.  He decided to fight and kill the dragon and become a hero.  Then his mother would kiss him and be proud of him.  His father would say, “That’s my boy!”  And the people would love him and chant his name.

Colin asked his uncle if he could borrow his armor.  It was a little big for him.

He asked his father if he could borrow his sword.  It was a very heavy sword.

He asked his brother if he could borrow his shield.  The shield was even heavier than the sword.

“Where are you going?” asked his mother when she saw Colin wearing the armor and dragging the sword and
shield.

“To fight the dragon!” Colin cried.

“That is very brave of you,” said his mother.  Then she packed him a lunch and gave him a kiss and sent him on his
way.

Colin was very tired when he got to the dragon’s cave.  His armor was heavy.  His sword was heavy.  And his shield was the heaviest of all.  It is very hard to be a knight, Colin decided.

“Hey you, dragon!” he called.  “Come out now and fight me!”

The dragon came out. He looked at Colin, and then he smiled. “It is almost lunch time,” he said. “First I will fight you, and then I will eat you.”

Colin wasn’t scared. He swung his heavy sword, but it only chopped off a bit of the dragon’s toenail and sent it flying into Colin’s eye. The dragon smiled and batted the sword away while Colin picked dragon toenail out of his eye.

Colin charged the dragon with his shield.  He ran as fast as he could, but he bounced right off of the dragon’s foot.
The dragon’s ankle left a large dent in his shield. The dragon smiled and batted the shield away while Colin got to his feet.

Even though he had no weapons, he still had his armor.  Colin started jumping on the dragon’s foot.  But he couldn’t see very well through his helmet, and his armor was very heavy.  He was getting very tired from his big battle, so he stopped and climbed back down.

“Alright,” Colin told the dragon.  “I will let you live, but I will have to take you prisoner.”  Then Colin started to unpack the lunch his mom had made for him.

“Prisoner!  I should eat you now,” cried the dragon.  Then he looked at Colin’s lunch.  “What is that you are eating?”

“Peanut butter and jelly sandwich,” Colin said between bites.

“Where did you get it?”

“My mom made it for me. Do you want half?”

The dragon wagged his tail so that the earth shook.  He flapped his wings so that a nearby cat flew into a tree.  “Oh!  I would love some.”

The dragon ate the sandwich in one bite and then watched Colin pull a banana out of his lunch. “What is that?” he
asked.

“Banana,” Colin answered, handing him half.  The dragon let out a happy squeak that made dogs from miles away start howling.  Then he ate the banana in one bite.

Colin shared the rest of his lunch with the dragon, and the dragon was very happy.  “I think I might like a mother,” he said.

Colin thought for a minute. “I could share mine with you.  But then you wouldn’t be my prisoner.  You would be my brother.”  Colin thought about it.  His mother already kissed him and was proud of him.  His father already said, “That’s my boy!”  He decided he did not need to be a hero after all.  “I guess I don’t need a prisoner,” he told the dragon.

“I wouldn’t eat you if I were your brother,” the dragon said.

So Colin took the dragon home to his mother.  “Hi Mom. I decided not to kill the dragon and become a hero.  We’re going to be brothers instead.”

“Will you be my mommy?” the dragon asked Colin’s mother.

Colin’s mother looked at him and smiled.  “Of course,” she said, and kissed his ankle.

Now the dragon does not blow smoke on the people of Nosh and turn them black…except when he sneezes. And he does sneeze three or four times a day.  The people of Nosh still take a lot of baths.

Now the dragon does not flap his wings and blow the cats and dogs of Nosh into the trees…except when he’s happy.  And he feels happy many times during the day.  The firefighters of Nosh still rescue a lot of cats and dogs.

Now the dragon does not make high pitched squeaky noises that make the dogs of Nosh howl…except when he laughs.  And he laughs five or six times a day.  The people of Nosh still have to listen to the dogs howl and bark.

But now the dogs and cats and people of Nosh love the dragon.

The people of Nosh do not have meetings about the dragon.  They do not have laws against dragons.  When he and Colin pass, they wave and smile at them.  “Look at the happy brothers!” the people say.  “They look so much alike.”

“Where are you going today?” Colin and the dragon’s mom asks them.

“To catch the monsters that live in the woods!” Colin and the dragon cry.

“You are both very brave,” she tells them.  Then she packs them a lunch and kisses them both and sends them on their way.
