My Special Baby

A long time ago, my special baby, you lived in the sky.  You rode the stars like a cowboy and called out, “Yeehaw!”  You lassoed the stardust with a rope, and it fell on your head and made your hair glow.  Then you swung from star to star like a monkey.  You laughed and played and smiled all day.

When you got tired, you climbed into a passing asteroid.  The stars sung to you until you fell asleep.

You lived like this for many years, until one day you realized you were lonely.  The stars sang to you, but there was no one to hug you and kiss your head and call you a special baby.

When you realized this, you rode a star a long ways to meet the Man on the moon.  You sat on the end of the Man’s long nose and told him you were lonely.  The Man said that he understood loneliness.

The Man on the moon wanted to help you.  In his deep, deep voice, he told you, “Tonight, when it gets dark, climb onto my moonbeam and slide to the earth.  There you will find someone to hug you and kiss your head and call you a special baby.”

Then you waited for the sky to get dark.  When it was so dark that it was hard to see, you climbed onto the moonbeam and slid down, just like the Man told you.

You slid past the stars that you used to ride like a cowboy and swing from like a monkey.  You slid under the stardust you used to lasso.  You slid away from the asteroid where you used to sleep.  You slid far away from the world where you used to laugh and play and smile all day.  You slid away from your loneliness.  The whole way, the stars sang sad songs because they knew they would miss you.

You slid down the moonbeam until the night ended.  Just as the sun was stretching and waking up, you slid through my window and into my bed.

When I woke up, I found you sleeping beside me.  You were tired from your long journey.  I tucked you in and watched you sleep.

When you woke up, you didn’t have to tell me about where you used to live.  I could tell from the way your hair glowed from stardust.

You didn’t have to tell me you were lonely.  I could tell because when I held you, I heard the stars singing their sad songs.

We played all day.  You rode your rocking horse and lassoed my bed post.  You swung from the bars at the park like a monkey.  Together, we laughed and played and smiled all day.

When you got tired, I put you in my bed.  Then I opened the window and thanked the Man on the moon for sending you.

I climbed into the bed with you and lay beside you.  I hugged you and kissed your head and called you my special baby.

Through the window, the stars sang to us until we fell asleep.
